When the playbook first launched, many of us were relieved to see a great tool called LocalBar hit the internet. LocalBar allowed us to sideload apps to our PlayBook without the use of a USB cable between the PlayBook and our computer. However when OS2 became available, LocalBar was blocked by RIM and ceased to function.
Well our disappointment is over, LocalBar2 is here. It works much like the first incarnation in that it allows .bar files on the PlayBook to be installed from the device, but requires a proxy to run. This can be done by installing a proxy app on your computer, your BlackBerry smartphone or even using and installing to another PlayBook. The key is that all devices being used have to be on the same wifi network.
First step is to download and and sideload LocalBar2 via computer to your Playbook. Next step is to install a proxy on either your computer or your BlackBerry Smartphone. For this tutorial I am using my BlackBerry Bold 9930 as the proxy.
Start the Proxy on your BlackBerry Smartphone (or computer).
Open the LocalBar2 app up on your Playbook and you will get this screen.
On the left hand side will be any bars that are downloaded onto your Playbook in your Downloads folder, highlight the one you want to install.
Next Enter your proxy IP into the Proxy Address box. Then, enter your developer password you set on your Playbook.
Click Install and let the PlayBook do the rest.
You now have successfully Sideloaded an app to your Playbook using LocalBar2.
To install from one Playbook to another is similar to the steps above. Click on the tab that says “Other Device”.
You will be presented with this screen
Make sure the device you are installing to is in Development Mode and enter the IP address of the other device into the Remote Address box.
Highlight the bar you want to install.
Enter the other devices Developer password into the Other device’s password box.
Click Install, and let the PlayBook do the rest.
You have now installed a bar from one Playbook to another using LocalBar2.
